Garage Door
Glossary
Understand the terminology, components, and concepts of garage door systems.
Torsion Spring
A tightly wound spring mounted on a shaft above the garage door opening that uses torque to lift and lower the door.
→
Extension Spring
A spring that stretches and contracts along the horizontal tracks on either side of the garage door.
→
R-Value (Insulation Rating)
A measure of thermal resistance — how well a garage door resists heat transfer. Higher R-value = better insulation.
→
Safety Cable
A steel cable threaded through extension springs to contain them if they break, preventing injury or property damage.
→
Garage Door Cable
Aircraft-grade galvanized steel cables that connect the bottom brackets of the door to the spring system, enabling safe lifting.
→
Cable Drum
A grooved cylindrical spool mounted at each end of the torsion bar that the lifting cable winds around.
→
Torsion Bar (Spring Shaft)
The steel shaft mounted horizontally above the garage door opening that holds the torsion springs and cable drums.
→
Bottom Bracket
The heavy-duty bracket at the bottom corner of each garage door panel where the lifting cable attaches.
→
Garage Door Roller
Small wheels (nylon or steel) attached to the sides of each door panel that ride inside the vertical and curved tracks.
→
Garage Door Track
The metal rail system (vertical, curved, and horizontal sections) that guides the rollers and door panels during opening and closing.
→
Auto-Reverse Mechanism
A safety feature that causes the garage door to automatically reverse direction if it contacts an object while closing.
→
Photo-Eye Sensor
Infrared sensors mounted on either side of the garage door opening that detect obstructions and trigger the auto-reverse.
→
Weatherstripping (Weather Seal)
Flexible rubber or vinyl strips installed around the perimeter of the garage door to seal gaps against weather, pests, and debris.
→
Rolling Code Technology
A security feature in garage door remotes that generates a new access code every time the button is pressed, preventing code theft.
→
Smart Garage Door Opener
A Wi-Fi-connected garage door opener that can be controlled and monitored via smartphone app from anywhere.
→
Battery Backup
A built-in rechargeable battery in a garage door opener that allows operation during power outages.
→
Emergency Release (Red Cord)
A red-handled cord hanging from the opener trolley that disconnects the door from the opener for manual operation.
→
Spring Cycle Life
The number of open/close cycles a garage door spring is rated for before it is expected to fail.
→
Sectional Garage Door
A garage door made of horizontal panels (sections) connected by hinges that bend at the curve in the track.
→
Roll-Up Door
A garage door made of narrow slats that coil around a drum above the opening — common in commercial and industrial applications.
→
Insulated Garage Door
A garage door with insulation material (polyurethane or polystyrene) sandwiched between steel panels for thermal efficiency.
→
Wind Load Rating
A measure of how much wind pressure a garage door can withstand — critical in storm-prone regions.
→
Opener Horsepower (HP)
The motor power rating of a garage door opener — typically ½ HP, ¾ HP, or 1¼ HP for residential applications.
→
Track Alignment
The process of adjusting the vertical and horizontal track sections so the garage door moves smoothly without binding or jumping.
→
Garage Door Panel (Section)
One horizontal section of a sectional garage door — panels can often be individually replaced if damaged.
