What is a Opener Horsepower (HP)?

The motor power rating of a garage door opener — typically ½ HP, ¾ HP, or 1¼ HP for residential applications.

Horsepower (HP) rating indicates the motor power of a garage door opener. Common residential ratings are: ½ HP — suitable for standard single-car uninsulated doors (the minimum recommended), ¾ HP — the most popular choice for standard single and double-car insulated doors, and 1¼ HP — recommended for heavy, oversized, or custom wood doors. Some manufacturers now use an HPS (Horsepower System) rating that accounts for the complete drive system efficiency, not just the motor. When choosing an opener, consider the weight of your door (not just size) — a heavy insulated double-car door may weigh 200+ lbs and requires a ¾ HP or higher opener. An undersized opener will work harder, run hotter, and fail prematurely. Conversely, there's no downside to choosing a more powerful opener — it will simply work less hard and last longer. DC motor openers (vs. older AC motors) offer softer starts/stops, quieter operation, and battery backup capability.
