What is a Battery Backup?

A battery backup is a built-in rechargeable battery system in select garage door openers that allows the door to be opened and closed during power outages. In Canada, where winter storms frequently cause power interruptions, a battery backup ensures you can always get your car in and out of the garage. Most battery backup systems provide 20–50 cycles of operation on a full charge (enough for several days of normal use during an outage). The battery charges automatically when power is available and typically lasts 3–5 years before needing replacement. LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie all offer models with integrated battery backup. This feature is especially valuable if your garage is the primary entry point to your home or if you have an attached garage where being unable to close the door creates a security risk.
