What is a Weatherstripping (Weather Seal)?

Flexible rubber or vinyl strips installed around the perimeter of the garage door to seal gaps against weather, pests, and debris.

Weatherstripping (also called weather seal or door seal) refers to the flexible rubber, vinyl, or thermoplastic strips installed around the perimeter of a garage door to create a seal between the door and the frame. There are several types: bottom seal (or astragal) — a wide rubber strip attached to the bottom of the door that compresses against the floor; side seals (or jamb seals) — strips mounted to the door frame on each side; and top seal — a strip that seals the gap between the top panel and the header. In Canadian climates, quality weatherstripping is essential for keeping out snow, rain, cold drafts, insects, and rodents. Weatherstripping should be inspected annually and replaced when it becomes cracked, brittle, or no longer makes full contact. Most weatherstripping can be replaced without tools.
