What is a R-Value (Insulation Rating)?
A measure of thermal resistance — how well a garage door resists heat transfer. Higher R-value = better insulation.
R-value measures the thermal resistance of a material — in this case, the insulation inside a garage door. The higher the R-value, the better the door resists heat transfer, keeping your garage warmer in winter and cooler in summer. For Canadian homes, insulated garage doors are especially important because garages are often attached to the home, and an uninsulated door acts as a massive thermal bridge. Common R-values for garage doors: R-6 to R-9 (basic insulation, suitable for detached garages), R-12 to R-13 (moderate insulation, good for attached garages), R-16 (our most popular choice — excellent for Canadian climates), and R-18+ (premium insulation for heated garages or extreme cold regions like the Prairies and Northern Ontario). Insulated doors are also significantly quieter and more durable than non-insulated doors.
