What is a Wind Load Rating?

A measure of how much wind pressure a garage door can withstand — critical in storm-prone regions.

Wind load rating measures the amount of wind pressure (measured in pounds per square foot, or PSF) that a garage door can withstand without structural failure. Wind load requirements vary by region and are specified in local building codes. In Canada, wind load ratings are particularly important in: Atlantic provinces (hurricane-season winds), the Prairies (extreme straight-line winds), and any area designated as a high-wind zone under the National Building Code of Canada. Standard residential garage doors typically have a wind load rating of 20–30 PSF. Reinforced doors with wind load bracing can withstand 35–50+ PSF. Wind load reinforcement is achieved through horizontal steel struts (braces) bolted to the inside of each door panel, heavier-gauge steel panels, and reinforced track and bracket systems. If your area requires wind-rated doors, ensure your replacement door meets or exceeds the local code requirement.
