What is a Safety Cable?

A steel cable threaded through extension springs to contain them if they break, preventing injury or property damage.

Safety cables are steel cables that run through the center of extension springs and are anchored at both ends — one end to the track bracket and the other to the wall or ceiling. Their sole purpose is containment: if an extension spring breaks (which happens under extreme tension), the safety cable prevents the broken spring from flying across the garage and causing injury or damage. Safety cables are required by building codes in most Canadian provinces for homes with extension springs. If your garage door has extension springs without safety cables, this is a serious safety hazard that should be addressed immediately. During every service call, our technicians inspect safety cables and install them if they are missing.
