What is a Garage Door Track?
The metal rail system (vertical, curved, and horizontal sections) that guides the rollers and door panels during opening and closing.
Garage door tracks are the metal rail system that guides the door panels as they move between open and closed positions. A standard track system has three sections on each side: a vertical section (from floor to just above the door opening), a curved section (that transitions the door from vertical to horizontal), and a horizontal section (that runs along the ceiling where the door parks when open). Tracks are typically made from galvanized steel and come in different gauges (thicknesses) depending on the weight of the door. Proper track alignment is critical — even a slight misalignment can cause the door to bind, make excessive noise, or jump off the track entirely. Track alignment should be checked during annual maintenance. Bent or damaged track sections should be replaced rather than straightened, as re-bent metal is weakened.
