What is a Garage Door Cable?

Aircraft-grade galvanized steel cables that connect the bottom brackets of the door to the spring system, enabling safe lifting.

Garage door cables are the critical link between the spring system and the door itself. They are typically made from aircraft-grade galvanized steel — the same material used in aviation applications — for maximum strength and corrosion resistance. Cables attach to the bottom brackets on each side of the door and wind around cable drums at the top. When the springs release their stored energy, the cables transmit that force to lift the door evenly. Cables can fray or break due to rust (common in Canadian climates with road salt), wear from rubbing against the track, or sudden spring failure. A broken cable causes the door to hang at a dangerous angle or drop suddenly. Cables should always be replaced in pairs, and the springs and drums should be inspected at the same time.
