What is a Rolling Code Technology?

A security feature in garage door remotes that generates a new access code every time the button is pressed, preventing code theft.

Rolling code technology (also known as hopping code or intellicode) is a security feature used in modern garage door openers and remotes. Unlike older fixed-code systems where the remote transmits the same radio frequency code every time, rolling code systems generate a new, unique code from billions of possible combinations each time the remote button is pressed. This makes it virtually impossible for thieves to intercept and duplicate the signal (a technique called "code grabbing" that was common with older fixed-code remotes). LiftMaster's Security+ 2.0, Chamberlain's MyQ, and Genie's Intellicode are all rolling code systems. If your garage door opener was manufactured before 1996, it likely uses fixed-code technology and should be upgraded for security. Rolling code remotes are compatible only with rolling code receivers — you cannot mix systems.
